Self-Control and Christian Men: The First Battle
“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” – Proverbs 25:28
Christian Men Need Self-Control
You can look strong. You can sound spiritual.
But if you can’t rule yourself, you’ll never lead anyone else.
Self-control is the battle no one sees, but it determines everything.
For Christian men who feel called to more, this is where the real fight begins.
Samson: A Strong Man Without Self-Control
Samson was chosen by God before he was even born. His parents were visited by an angel who declared that Samson would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines (enemies of the people of God). He had incredible physical strength- the stuff of legend.
He was to be a Nazirite, meaning he would live under special vows of separation and holiness:
- No alcohol
- No touching dead bodies
- No cutting his hair
(See Judges 13:3–5)
But despite his calling, Samson lived by impulse, not discipline.
Here’s what his lack of self-control looked like:
- He touched the carcass of a lion to scoop out honey—violating his Nazirite vow.
→ Judges 14:8–9 - He demanded to marry a Philistine woman, ignoring God’s instructions and his parents’ wisdom.
→ Judges 14:1–3
“Get her for me, for she pleases me well.” – Judges 14:3
- He later slept with a prostitute in Gaza, again showing disregard for God’s design for purity.
→ Judges 16:1 - He fell in love with Delilah, a woman who repeatedly tried to trap him, and he stayed with her in spite of her attempts.
→ Judges 16:4–20
Eventually, he revealed the secret of his incredible strength (his uncut hair) not because he trusted Delilah, but because he was emotionally worn down and spiritually blind.
Samson had strength but no self-control.
He was called by God—but he kept giving himself over to compromise.
And in the end, he lost everything—his strength, his freedom, his sight, and his position as Israel’s leader.
He had immense physical power but he didn’t have control over his own desires.
Christian men today are falling the same way. It’s not necessarily from weakness, but from refusing to master their own hearts.
What Happens When Christian Men Lose Self-Control
When you don’t rule yourself, the enemy doesn’t have to beat you—you’ll do it for him.
- Lust replaces love.
- Anger replaces wisdom.
- Comfort replaces vocation.
- You trade purpose for pleasure, little by little.
“He did not know the Lord had left him.” – Judges 16:20
That’s what happens when Christian men stop fighting for self-control.
Why Self-Control Is a Spiritual Issue, Not Just Willpower
Self-control isn’t about grit.
It’s about surrender.
It’s the fruit of the Spirit—not just a better morning routine.
“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16
“I discipline my body and keep it under control…” – 1 Corinthians 9:27
Self-control for Christian men starts with spiritual alignment, not personal effort.
How Christian Men Can Start Practicing Self-Control This Week
1. Get Honest
Call it out. Lust, anger, laziness. Name whatever’s ruling you. Naming it is the first step of controlling it.
2. Focus Yourself
Pick one area this week. Don’t try to win every battle; just win one. What is a step you can take this week?
3. Connect Yourself
You can’t fight alone for long. It’s too much.
You need others walking with you.
4. Fill Yourself
Don’t fight empty. Get in the Word. Stay in prayer. Walk with the Spirit.
This is the path of real self-control for Christian men.
Christian Men Must Win This Battle First
Self-control isn’t optional.
It’s the first win. The one that makes all other victories possible.
God is looking for men He can trust—men who won’t collapse under pressure.
Be that man.
