Before You Build, Be Still: A Spiritual Growth Plan for Men
There’s a time to act on a spiritual growth plan.
But before starting is a time to pause.
Most of us want to jump to the fix. We want to do something, to rebuild, restore, or rise. But in the Bible, every great movement of God starts with stillness, with a man willing to stop long enough to see clearly.
That’s what Nehemiah did.
The Burden That Led to Breakthrough
Nehemiah wasn’t a prophet or a warrior. He was a cupbearer, an everyday man with a steady job, far from the place where God’s people were suffering.
But when he heard the news that Jerusalem’s walls were in ruins, something broke inside him.
“When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.”
—Nehemiah 1:4
He didn’t brush it off, didn’t scroll past it. He didn’t say, “Well, someone should probably do something about that.”
No, he stopped. Reflected. Prayed. Mourned. And then planned.
Why Men Skip the Pause (and Why We Can’t Afford To)
We think reflection is weakness.
Or worse—we think it’s a waste of time.
But Nehemiah shows us it’s the starting point for building something meaningful.
Before you fix your habits…
Or rebuild your marriage…
Before you launch the next thing…
You need to reflect.
You need to ask hard questions:
- What am I carrying that I haven’t dealt with?
- Where am I avoiding the truth?
- What needs to change in me before anything changes around me?
- What will I be doing in a Christian spiritual growth plan?
3 Steps to a Spiritual Growth Plan (Nehemiah Style)
This is a simple plan to help you move from reflection to action:
1. Reflect
Ask God to reveal what’s broken around you and within you. Write down the emotions you feel when you slow down. What’s unresolved? What keeps resurfacing?
2. Refocus
Nehemiah didn’t just feel something. He focused his heart. He sought clarity. What is God calling you to rebuild or strengthen? Where has your focus drifted?
3. Rebuild
Once Nehemiah got clarity, he asked the king for help, gathered resources, and took bold steps. Your growth plan needs specifics. What habit will you begin this week? What boundary will you set? Who will you ask for support?
Don’t Skip the Stillness
The world tells men to grind, hustle, and push through.
But the kingdom of God calls men to pause, reflect, and align before they act.
That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.
Take the time this week to reflect as preparation for the growth God has ahead.
🔥 Challenge for the Week
Set aside 30 minutes. No distractions. Just you, a notebook, and God.
Ask these three questions:
- Where am I stuck?
- What has God been showing me?
- What am I going to do about it?
Then build a simple growth plan and commit to it.
